Short layover vs long layover: be honest about the clock
Below 5 hours between flights, stay at the airport. Between passport control, travel time and the security margin you need on the way back, there is simply no comfortable window.
From about 6 hours, a quick city visit becomes possible. From 8 hours, it becomes genuinely enjoyable. The rule of thumb we give every traveller: subtract 2 hours for your next flight's check-in and security, 1.5 to 2 hours for the round trip, and what remains is your real time in Paris.
CDG to Paris: the transfer maths
CDG sits about 30 km north-east of central Paris. A private transfer reaches the centre in 45 to 60 minutes depending on traffic; the RER B takes about 35 minutes to Châtelet but adds walking, stairs and ticket queues at both ends.
With luggage, a driver who meets you in arrivals and drops you back at your terminal is the difference between a stressful dash and a relaxed afternoon. Your bags stay in the car during the tour if you book the vehicle for the whole window.
Sample itineraries by layover length
Here is what we regularly organise for connecting passengers:
- 6-hour layover (about 2.5 hours in town): Eiffel Tower photo stop, a drive along the Champs-Élysées and past the Arc de Triomphe, then back to CDG.
- 8-hour layover (about 4.5 hours in town): Eiffel Tower, Trocadéro, a Seine-side drive, a one-hour lunch stop in Saint-Germain or near the Louvre, then back.
- 10-hour layover or more (6+ hours in town): a proper half-day — major monuments, a museum visit or shopping, and dinner before your evening flight.
Transfer vs layover tour: what is the difference?
A simple transfer is point A to point B: airport to hotel, hotel to airport. A layover tour is hourly hire — the car and driver stay with you for the whole window, wait at every stop, adapt the route in real time and guarantee the return timing is built into the plan.

How not to miss your flight
Agree the return pick-up time with your driver before the tour starts, not at the end. We plan the return backwards from your boarding time: boarding minus 2 hours at the terminal, minus 60 minutes of road, minus a traffic buffer.
Keep your passport, boarding pass and next-flight details in your hand luggage, not in a checked-through suitcase mindset. If your bags are checked through to the final destination, confirm that with your airline before leaving the airport — most long-haul connections through CDG check luggage through, but a quick confirmation avoids a bad surprise.
