Paris is one of Europe's great connection hubs — and one of its trickiest, because the region has two major airports 40 km apart. Whether your connection is a simple same-terminal transit or an airport change that crosses the whole city, the difference between a calm connection and a missed flight is planning. Here is what actually matters.
Same-airport connections: the easy case
On a single ticket through CDG, your bags are checked through and you follow the yellow 'correspondance' signs airside — you never enter France, and 90 minutes is usually comfortable.
The warning signs are separate tickets, a terminal change at CDG (2G is a bus ride away), or a non-Schengen to Schengen switch, all of which add passport and security steps. Two hours is the safe floor for anything non-standard.
The CDG ↔ Orly airport change
This is the connection that catches travellers out: landing at one airport and departing from the other. By road it is 60 to 90 minutes depending on traffic, and there is no fast rail shortcut.
Our honest minimum: 4.5 hours between scheduled landing and the next departure — 1 hour to clear arrivals, 1.5 on the road with buffer, 2 hours at the departing airport. A private transfer (€80 sedan / €130 van between either airport and Paris zone; ask for the airport-to-airport rate at booking) removes the two riskiest links: finding transport and predicting the road.
Overnight connections: sleep in the city
An evening arrival with a morning departure is not a problem — it is a bonus night in Paris. A transfer into the city (45–60 minutes from CDG, 30–40 from Orly), a hotel near the centre, dinner in a real neighbourhood, and a timed pick-up back to the airport in the morning.
Book both legs at once; the morning pick-up is calculated backwards from your flight with the traffic buffer already in the plan.
