Visiting Versailles from Paris: smart timing and private transport

The right time slot

The palace opens at 09:00 and closes at 18:30 (17:30 in low season). Peak attendance falls between 10:30 and 14:00.

Our two recommended windows:

• Leave Paris at 07:45: you are inside the State Apartments before 09:30, almost alone
• Leave at 13:30: the morning crowd thins out and the light over the gardens is better
• Avoid Tuesdays (many Paris museums close, overflow lands here) and Musical Fountain Sundays
• Closed on Mondays — the most common mistake

How long it really takes

The estate is vast. An honest visit does not fit into two hours.

• Palace only (Hall of Mirrors, State Apartments): 1h30 to 2h
• Gardens: 1h to 1h30 on foot, more on Musical Fountain days
• Trianon and the Queen's Hamlet: another 1h30, a 25-minute walk from the palace
• A comfortable full day: 5 to 6 hours on site

Getting there: RER C or private car

The RER C reaches Versailles Château-Rive Gauche in 40 to 60 minutes from the centre for about €8, then a 10-minute walk. Cheap, but usually packed at weekends and rough with children or in the rain.

By private car, drop-off is a few dozen metres from the entrance, and the chauffeur collects the group at the same point at the agreed time — no scrambling for a ride home at closing.
